Five tips to make your admission essay sound like you.

1. Be specific

Instead of “I love science,” describe the moment you got hooked — the experiment, the teacher, the result. One concrete story beats a list of traits. Specifics make you memorable.

2. Show, don’t tell

Don’t say “I’m a leader.” Describe a situation where you led: what you did, what changed. Let the reader see the quality in the story.

3. Start with a strong opening

The first sentence should make them want to read the next. A specific scene, a line of dialogue, or a surprising fact works better than a general statement about your life.

4. Stay within the word limit

Going over suggests you can’t edit. If the limit is 500 words, aim for 480. Cut anything that doesn’t add to the main point.

5. Sound like yourself

Don’t use a thesaurus for every word. Write as you’d speak to a thoughtful adult. Authenticity beats fancy language.
